AFJROTC

The mission of Air Force JROTC is “To develop citizens of character dedicated to serving their nation and community.”

Almost 900 high schools around the world host AFJROTC units. Each unit has at least two instructors: a retired Air Force officer and a retired Air Force NCO. The unit at Burkburnett High School is designated TX-20008 and was activated in August 2000.

Since August 2010, students from Iowa Park High School have also participated in the program. These cadets are transported by bus to/from Burkburnett High School on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during 8th period. We are organized as a Cadet Group with a Cadet Group Commander, two Deputy Group Commanders, our Inspector General, and the Cadet Command Chief ensuring the proper functioning of the Corps. Activities include classroom academics (Aerospace Science & Leadership Education), physical fitness, community service, social events, drill teams, Saber team, color guard teams, field trips, base visits, the Veterans Day parade, an Annual Awards Banquet, and more.

Any student in 9th grade through 12th grade may enroll in the class. Uniforms are worn weekly by cadets and are provided at no cost to them. Cadets earn ribbons and promotions based on performance and can choose to attend optional Summer Leadership Camps at Howard Payne University. The cost for summer 2017 is $90 for the week. Cadets practice Air Force customs & courtesies as they advance from Cadet Airman to higher levels of responsibility. Air Force grooming standards (such as haircuts, facial hair, piercings, etc.) must also be maintained by all cadets.

Although many cadets enlist in the military or enroll in college ROTC programs after graduation, there is no military obligation. AFJROTC is not a recruiting program for the Armed Forces. Instructors do, however, guide and mentor cadets exploring enlistment options or applying for ROTC scholarships and Service Academies.
