These young historians recently explored the inspiring story of Charlye Ola Farris, a true Wichita Falls legend and Texas’ first Black female attorney. As part of their social studies curriculum, students learned about Farris’ groundbreaking achievements, including her role as the first Black woman to serve as a judge in Texas and her lasting impact on the legal profession.
To take their learning beyond the classroom, students were given an extra credit opportunity to visit her statue in downtown Wichita Falls. Many of them eagerly took the challenge, visiting the monument, reflecting on her contributions, and even sharing their insights with classmates.
This hands-on experience not only deepened their understanding of local history but also inspired them to think about how they, too, can make a difference in their communities.
Way to go, future leaders! 👏✨
