Our first stop on the Technology Tour 2012 is Mrs. Lucas' Pre-K 4 classroom where we'll talk about Interactive Whiteboards . Nearly every classroom on campus, as well as our Library, Math Lab, and Reading Lab is equipped with an Interactive Whiteboard. These boards allow students, as well as teachers, to engage in true hands-on learning like never before. There are two different types of boards on our campus, Promethean and PolyVision. One operates with the use of a stylus while the other can be manipulated with a stylus or just the touch of your finger. Through the ActiVision Software, teachers are able to develop slideshow style presentations to aid in the teaching process. These presentations can be edited and modified with just a tap of the finger or click of the stylus.
These boards accomplish the work of the whiteboard and dry erase marker, and make the traditional chalk board and chalk completely obsolete. What about overheard projectors and pull down screens? Well let's just put it this way, Ms. Avens had to utilize one of those at the beginning of the school year and it completely baffled her classroom In Mrs. Lucas' Pre-K 4 class you can find them using their Interactive Whiteboard daily for calendar, and circle time activities. They also use the board to emphasis sequencing skills, build Thinking Maps, review letters and numbers, help build fine motor skills, and it is even used as an additional Center for students to use freely and independently. Mrs. Lucas loves using the Whiteboard in her classroom because of the interaction it allows from her students and because of the excitement that ensues when she announces it is Whiteboard Time!
" They LOVE the opportunity to interact on the white board. We can literally sit there for hours as long as the students are able to participate and interact. They get upset when they don't get a chance on the Whiteboard and they get upset because they say we don't use it enough!" Lucas said. "It is a GREAT opportunity to have a white board and…watch the children get excited to learn but This technology allows students the opportunity to be more involved in their learning than ever before. It allows them to see their learning at work and has totally revolutionized the way lessons are formed and taught. The great thing about this particular piece of technology is that it teaches without the students really even realizing it. And isn't that always the best way to learn?

In this blog we will be showcasing all the things Tower has to offer its students through technology. Tower is one of the most technologically advanced schools in the area with different forms of technology being utilized across every grade level and subject. Join me, Sarah Reeder, Computer Lab Paraprofessional, as we take a Tour of Technology at Tower. Each day we will focus on a different piece of technology that allows our students to engage in a more hands-on learning experience.
